INDEXING: THE BASICS

In this course, you will learn about back-of-the-book indexing. Your knowledge will come from extensive practical experience in writing indexes, detailed feedback from your instructor, and the opportunity to share and compare your indexes with your peers.

There are five classes of four hours each. Homework assignments will require a minimum of 10-15 hours between sessions.

Each class session will include the following activities.
• We complete a variety of short indexing exercises that illustrate the principles of the craft.
• We analyze and compare different indexes that have been written for the same books.
• I write an index in class and talk out loud about the decisions made during the indexing process. You will be able to see the index on a computer screen as it develops.
• Between class sessions, you index 50-100 pages of material from a variety of sources. In class, we will compare those indexes and talk about the decisions that were made for each one. After class, I review your index and offer written feedback on your work.
• We spend some time discussing the business aspects of freelance indexing.

The first class provides an introduction to the profession. Included in this session will be information about the skills required to become a successful freelance indexer. There will be self-assessment opportunities for indexing and business aptitudes.
